Social Networking Numbers Bounce Back

Great post over on Mashable! about the social networking sites picking up numbers in October.

Some publications were quick to point out that YouTube, Facebook, and MySpace had declining numbers in September. However, not all pointed out that this is common in September when students are heading back to school. They clearly rebounded in October.

Meanwhile, I’ve wondered if Social Networks would start losing steam. However, the trend lines on the Mashable! post seem to indicate otherwise. I do think social networking will continue to evolve.

In the past, the definition of social networks was confined to the MySpaces and Facebooks of the world, but as we’re seeing, that definiton continues to evolve. It now includes YouTube, Flickr and to a lesser degree even Wikipedia.

It’s questionable how much more the U.S. market will support with the recent arrival of Cyworld from Korea and the announced changes to Finland-based Habbo Hotel to add social networking features.

In the end, it’s clear that in the Web 2.0 world, community driven interaction is key and, no matter how saturated the social networking market becomes, will not be going away anytime soon.
